Uptobox — History, shutdown and alternatives

Uptobox was a Swiss file storage and download service launched in 2011. Seized by the French authorities in late September 2023, its servers have been permanently blocked since August 2024. Here is what you need to know — and how to download your links in 2026.

At a glance

  • Uptobox has been inaccessible since late September 2023.
  • The servers were seized by the French judiciary.
  • Nine domains were confirmed blocked on August 9, 2024.
  • Stored files cannot be recovered.
  • No official reopening is planned.

What was Uptobox?

Uptobox was a Switzerland-based file host launched in 2011. The service let users upload and share large files through a free plan (1 TB of storage) or premium plans (unlimited, between €5 and €149 depending on duration).

After Megaupload shut down in 2012, the platform became one of the most popular French-speaking file hosts. It ran on a two-tier model: free accounts with throttled speed and wait times between downloads, and premium accounts offering maximum speed with no restrictions.

A points system rewarded contributors whose files were downloaded by other users. Points could be converted into premium subscriptions or, at some periods, exchanged for cash payments (up to roughly \$10,000 for 5 million points).

Why was Uptobox shut down?

Uptobox had become a priority target for rights holders due to large-scale hosting of copyrighted content. The service had already been deindexed from Google, banned from Visa and Mastercard payment networks, and was inaccessible in the United States and several countries enforcing active blocks.

The effective shutdown followed a French judicial procedure initiated by film and audiovisual industry organizations. The servers hosting the service were seized in late September 2023, making the platform immediately inaccessible to users.

In April 2024, the Paris judicial court rejected the request filed by Genius Servers Tech FZE — the technical operator of Uptobox — to recover the seized servers and data. The decision confirmed the permanent loss of access to stored content.

Shutdown timeline

  • 2011 — Uptobox is launched in Switzerland.
  • 2012-2022 — Rise in popularity after Megaupload shuts down, despite progressive deindexing by Google and Visa/Mastercard restrictions.
  • Late September 2023 — Servers seized by French authorities. The service becomes inaccessible.
  • April 2024 — The Paris judicial court rejects the restitution request filed by Genius Servers Tech FZE.
  • August 9, 2024 — Court ruling confirming the block on 9 domains linked to Uptobox.
  • March 18, 2026 — Block extended to 35 illegal streaming sites, including removal of residual mirrors via ISPs, DNS, and VPN providers.

Can you recover your Uptobox files?

No. With the servers seized and the restitution request rejected, no official mechanism allows the recovery of stored files. User accounts — whether free or premium — have been inaccessible since late September 2023.

Several sites posing as mirrors or successors (Uptobox.eu, Uptostream.eu, Uptobox.fun, etc.) have appeared since the shutdown. None is officially linked to the original operator. These platforms carry significant risks: phishing, credential theft, malware distribution, and fraudulent paid subscriptions.

If you had paid for a premium plan at the time of the shutdown, no refund is planned — the operator no longer exists as a commercial entity.

Alternatives to Uptobox in 2026

The post-Uptobox landscape splits into two distinct use cases.

To store personal files (legal cloud)

Several mainstream cloud services offer substantial free storage: MEGA provides 20 GB free with client-side encryption, Google Drive 15 GB shared across the Google ecosystem, pCloud 10 GB with a lifetime purchase option. For sovereign professional needs, OVHcloud, Scaleway and S3NS won a €180M European framework contract in April 2026.

To download from other file hosts (multi-host debrider)

If you were looking for Uptobox to download links hosted elsewhere, a multi-host debrider is the right solution. World-Debrid supports more than fifteen active file hosts in 2026, including 1Fichier, RapidGator, Turbobit, Uploady, Mega, MediaFire, DDownload, KatFile, WDUpload and Google Drive.

The service debrids your links at maximum speed, no sign-up required for basic use, no intrusive advertising, and a global cache that serves instantly any link already debrided by other users.

Frequently asked questions

Is Uptobox still accessible in 2026?

No. Uptobox has been inaccessible since late September 2023 following the judicial seizure of its servers. The block on nine associated domains was confirmed by court ruling on August 9, 2024 and remains in force in 2026.

Can you recover your files stored on Uptobox?

No. The servers were seized by the French authorities and the restitution request filed by the operating company (Genius Servers Tech FZE) was rejected in April 2024. Stored files cannot be recovered.

Is there a trustworthy Uptobox mirror?

No. Sites presenting themselves as Uptobox.eu, Uptostream.eu or other mirrors are third-party sites not affiliated with the original operator. They carry phishing, data theft and malware risks. No official reopening has been announced.

What is the alternative to Uptobox for downloading 1Fichier or RapidGator links?

World-Debrid is a multi-host debrider that supports 1Fichier, RapidGator, Turbobit, Uploady, Mega, MediaFire and around fifteen other services. The service is free to use, no sign-up required for basic debriding.

Can I be prosecuted for having used Uptobox?

Simple private downloading via Uptobox is generally not prosecuted in France. The court proceedings targeted the operator of the service, not end users. That said, downloading copyrighted works without permission remains illegal — stick to content you are entitled to download.
